Mp3gain Express
When I found MP3Gain I theorized that the reason for this variance was the wide dB range of my entire audio collection. So I concluded that I first needed to bring, via MP3Gain, all of the mp3s in my collection to the same decibel level BEFORE burning CDs with the “Normalize All Audio Files” box checked. MP3Gain analyzes and adjusts mp3 files so that they have the same volume. There is no quality lost in the change because the program adjusts the mp3 file directly, without decoding and re-encoding. WxMP3val is a free front-end for the MP3gain.
Version History
v2.5 (Using MP3Gain 1.5.2 with AACGain 2.0.0) -- 2021-02-09- Added Czech translation by GVG.
- The window is now centered at launch.
- Toolbar icon sizes on macOS Big Sur now match previous verisons of the app.
- Major bug fixed: AAC (m4a) files were not working in version 2.4.1. These are working again.
v2.4.1 (Using MP3Gain 1.5.2 with AACGain 2.0.0) -- 2020-12-23
- Native support for Apple Silicon Macs.
- Minor update to the UI to make sure it looks the same on Big Sur (macOS 11) as it did on macOS 10.15.
v2.4 and v2.3.4 (Using MP3Gain 1.5.2 with AACGain 2.0.0) -- 2020-05-25
- Bug fixed: The undo feature was only processing the first file(s) in the list and stopping.
- Both versions 2.4 and 2.3.4 are identical, however Apple stopped allowing applications built for MacOS X 10.7 to be notarized so I had to make a separate build for older Macs.
- The updater should install the correct version for you automatically. Version 2.3.4 will be the last version that supports 10.7 to 10.11 for real this time.
- Known Issue: Processing already processed files (which will do nothing) after processing other files successfully has inconsistent results. Sometimes it may work normally, sometimes files will not be processed at all, and on older versions of macOS the app could hang. If you're using the app normally you should not run into problems. This version was originally released on May 1st 2020 then pulled 10 minutes later because I ran into this, but re-released on May 25th because I realized it worked fine under normal conditions.
- Reminder: MP3Gain and AACGain are for audio files only. Do not use it for videos! Some AAC audio files use the .mp4 extension, but this does not mean all .mp4 files are music or AAC audio. In the future I might remove the .mp4 file type because .m4a is most common for AAC audio.
v2.3.3 (Using MP3Gain 1.5.2 with AACGain 1.9.1) -- 2019-12-24
- This will be the last release to support 10.7 to 10.11. This version is still compatible with the latest version of macOS (10.15 Catalina) at the time of release.
- Album gain now displays progress in some situations.
- Bug fixed: Album gain never finishes for large albums.
- Bug fixed: Dark mode works again on all supported versions of macOS.
v2.3.2 (Using MP3Gain 1.5.2 with AACGain 1.9.1) -- 2019-12-17
Mp3gain Express Album Mode
- Replacement for version 2.3.1 which was not working on macOS 10.7 to 10.13.
- Known Issue: Dark Mode is not available on macOS 10.14 or later in this release.
v2.3.1 (Using MP3Gain 1.5.2 with AACGain 1.9.1) -- 2019-12-15
Mp3gain Express Download
- Albums are no longer processed twice. Status is no longer provided for Album mode.
- Critical Bug fixed: AACGain 1.9 would delete AAC (m4a) files that could not be processed. They are no longer deleted and instead get marked as not supported.
v2.3 (Using MP3Gain 1.5.2 with AACGain 1.9) -- 2018-11-21
- MP3Gain Express 2.3 has been notarized for macOS Mojave's Gatekeeper feature.
- The application has been translated into German by Hans-Juergen Merkel.
- Bug fixed: The 'Reprocess as Album' text was not localized into other languages.
v2.2 (Using MP3Gain 1.5.2 with AACGain 1.9) -- 2018-09-24
- Uses the built-in dark mode on macOS Mojave 10.14 or later. (Dark mode is still supported on macOS 10.11 and later)
- An updated Spanish translation was provided by Emilio Pérez Egido.
- The Add Files dialog now prevents you from selecting files that are not MP3 or AAC.
v2.1 (Using MP3Gain 1.5.2 with AACGain 1.9) -- 2017-10-07
- Brand new application icons, designed by George Leventidis
- Added a Greek translation, also contributed by George Leventidis
- Bug fixed: Toolbar customization was not being saved.
- Bug fixed: Dark mode was incompatible with the Increase Contrast accessiblity setting. Increase contrast now disables dark mode.
- Bug fixed: The application could crash in scenarios where an MP3Gain process could not launch when processing a large number of files. This should no longer cause a crash, and the application will attempt to process any files that failed in this manner once more after the rest of the files have processed.
v2.0.1 (Using MP3Gain 1.5.2 with AACGain 1.9) -- 2017-06-23
- Bug fixed: When using Album gain, the volume change was applied to the first file twice.
- Bug fixed: Fixed crash on launch if using OS X 10.10 and dark mode was enabled. The window style used by dark mode was not added until OS X 10.11, so MP3Gain now only matches the menu bar style if running on OS X 10.11 or later.
v2.0 (Using MP3Gain 1.5.2 with AACGain 1.9) -- 2017-06-18
- Added Album Gain support.
- Added AACGain (.m4a / .mp4 audio) support.
- Added multi-threaded processing to process multiple files at once. To accomplish this, the backend has been replaced and AACGain is now executed using separate processes in the background.
- Added a warning message for new users.
- Added a preferences dialog with the following options:
- You can specify how many files are processed concurrently. This defaults to 4 on any machine with 4 or more cores, otherwise it defaults to 2. The maximum that this can be set to is the number of logical cores in your machine.
- The last used volume settings can be saved. This is enabled by default.
- Check for updates can now be enabled or disabled.
- Failures when processing no longer display an error dialog. Instead the file list will indicate bad files after all files have been processed.
- When using dark mode on macOS 10.10 or later, the MP3Gain Express UI will also be dark to match.
- New icons that match the flat style of macOS 10.10 and above.
- Added validation to the volume setting, so users do not enter a value that would definitely produce a bad file.
- This version fixes a crash on application startup when using the macOS 10.13 High Sierra developer beta and 'Check for updates' is enabled.
- Note: This release is a 64-bit application and it should continue to work when Apple removes support for 32-bit apps from macOS in 2019.
v1.2 (Based on MP3Gain 1.5.2) -- 2014-11-09
- You can now drag and drop files or folders into the list to add them.
- Now requires OS X 10.7 or later.
v1.1.1 (Based on MP3Gain 1.5.2) -- 2013-02-02
- Automatic update was not working correctly using the old signing keys. Generated new ones, which should allow future releases to update correctly.
v1.1 (Based on MP3Gain 1.5.2) -- 2013-02-01
- Bug fixed: When processing files with long path names, the files may become corrupted. Note: Backing up your files before processing them is always a suggested practice until you're comfortable that the application is working correctly for you.
- The Add Folder feature can now look inside subfolders, the number of folders deep is selectable.
- A 'Prevent Clipping' checkbox has been added. If checked and increasing the volume of a file would cause clipping, this will automatically use the highest volume before clipping would occur.
- Added undo feature, which allows restoring a file with gain applied back to its original volume. This feature is found under the menu next to the apply button.
v1.0.2 (Based on MP3Gain 1.5.2) -- 2012-08-24

- Added automatic update feature.
v1.0.1 (Based on MP3Gain 1.5.2) -- 2012-08-14
- Bug fixed: Folder and file names containing foreign characters would cause Mp3gain to stop processing and not handle any further files.
v1.0 (Based on MP3Gain 1.5.2) -- 2012-01-08
- Initial release. Supports Analyze and Apply Track Gain.
